NYC 2022 | Day #3

Buckle up, Fraternity — we've got a lot of photos and updates to share from Thursday!

While the Badlands were the itinerary highlight of the day, our crew started out the morning with seven hours of driving still ahead of them before reaching their destination. As the scene out the window changed from corn to haybales, the youth did anything and everything to pass the time ... including a nap on the bus floor!

The buses enjoyed a short snack break ...

... and a quick rest stop along the Missouri River.

There was even enough time to spell out "MISSOURI" along the banks of the Missouri River. Anyone recognize the "M" and the "S"?

As the buses continued on, the landscape started changing ...

... until our travelers finally reached the Badlands!

We had the chance to catch up with our youth on Thursday evening. McKinley took the lead in answering our questions, and Kennedy and Melissa jumped in. Team effort!

Q: What was today's devotion about?
A: We talked about mountaintops and how many stories in the Bible took place on a mountaintop.

Q: How did you pass time on the bus today?
A: Music and sleeping

Q: Where did you eat lunch?
A: Wal-Mart. We stopped there around 10 a.m. and were told to get food for lunch as well as snacks for the rest of the day ... so we got food, ate on the bus, and kept driving. We still had a long way to go before we reached the Badlands!

Q: What has been the funniest moment of the trip so far?
A: When everyone got excited as we were coming up on a herd of bison ... but they turned out to be cows! (We did see other animals, though: mountain goats, antelope, and LOTS of prairie dogs.)

Q: What did you think of the Badlands?
A: It was hot, but very appeasing to look at.

Q: What did you do at the Badlands?
A: We did part of a hike, saw lots of different animals, and took lots of pictures. It was HOT today, so walking around the Badlands was draining. Seeing the sights from the bus was a lot more pleasant.

Q: Share something you learned today.
A: There are more than 2,000 seeds on a singular sunflower.

Q: What did you eat for dinner?
A: We ate at Wall Drug. Kennedy and Melissa had a buffalo burger while I played it safe with a chicken sandwich.

Q: What did Kennedy and Melissa think of the buffalo burger?
Kennedy: It kind of tasted like meatloaf.
Melissa: I'm not sure if it tasted like my meatloaf, but it's definitely different than a hamburger. I was a huge fan of the maple doughnut!

Q: Send a shout-out to someone back home.
Kennedy: Shout out to my dog, Boonie boy. I love and miss you.
McKinley: Shout out to my mom — I miss you.
Melissa: Shout out to Karen and Eleanor for keeping us occupied with pictures of Eleanor's very cute face.

Our youth enjoyed a beautiful ending to a great day with South Dakota sunset views on the way to their hotel along with an evening devotion from Psalm 8:1.

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.

The itinerary for Friday is supposed to be the longest day yet: on the bus by 7:40 a.m. and returning to the hotel after 9 p.m. (with no time for long naps on the bus floor). We're looking forward to hearing all about Bear Country, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and more — one final day of adventures before National Youth Conference starts on Saturday!
