NYC 2022 | Day #5

Our youth woke up on Saturday morning in South Dakota and hopped on the bus one final time (for now) to travel the remaining 333 miles to Fort Collins. The route took them through Wyoming before entering Colorado, bringing the total number of states traveled through up to 11. McKinley helped lead devotions on the bus.

As the buses got closer to Colorado State University, the scenes out the window started changing dramatically — from the Black Hills to the Rocky Mountains! The scenes out the plane window on Lydia's flight from Charlotte to Denver were pretty spectacular as well.

After arriving on campus around 3:45 p.m., our youth were eager to ditch the bus, go through registration, and kick off National Youth Conference!

Here's what Kennedy and McKinley had to say about the day:

Q: We saw that McKinley helped with devotions on the bus this morning. (Awesome!) What were the devotions about?
A: Today our devotion was all about foundations. The overall theme for National Youth Conference this year is “Foundational” — based on scripture from Colossians 2:5-7 — so today's devotion helped us get ready for conference.

Q: What else did you do on the bus today?
A: We did a lot of sleeping (some of it being on the floor). We also played some music and sang some Taylor Swift.

Q: What are you first impressions of Colorado State University?
A: It is so very hot and confusing. We have already had a serious thunderstorm. Lydia thinks it's a beautiful campus in a beautiful town.

Q: What dorm are you staying in?
A: We are staying in the Ingersoll dorm. All of us are on the third floor. We do not have A/C in our dorm, and there also is not an elevator.

Q: Where did you eat lunch / dinner?
A: For lunch, we ate at Five Guys in Cheyenne, Wyoming. For dinner, we ate at the Ram's Horn Dining Center on campus. Melissa, Kennedy, and McKinley had alfredo pasta, while Lydia had chicken and mashed potatoes.

Q: Who spoke at worship tonight and what did they talk about?
A: Rodger Nishioka was the speaker for opening worship. He spoke about the three foundational truths from Psalm 139: (1) God knows you, (2) God is with you, and (3) God leads you.

Q: Each congregation was asked to bring a rock to opening worship. What did you do with the rocks?
A: There was a big stack of rocks called the "worship center" and one person from each church brought up their congregation's rock to add to the foundation. Kennedy painted the rock for Fraternity and McKinley carried it up.

Q: What is one thing on the schedule for Sunday that you're excited about?
A: We are all excited for the Brethren Block Party — meeting new people, getting free stuff, and eating ice cream!

Once again, thanks to our youth for always being willing to send photos, answer questions, and keep us updated on their trip! These days are packed from sun-up to sun-down with so many things to do, people to meet, and memories to make (not to mention ice cream to eat!), and Fraternity is incredibly appreciative of the time the youth (and advisors) take out of their schedule to report back home.

Keep following along for more updates — NYC is just beginning!

  1. We prayed for you all (I do mean all of NYC) yesterday. Praise the Lord you arrived safely. So what was the particular meaning of the design of the rock you brought to NYC?
